Healthy Habits: A Student's Guide to Wellness Resources

Posted by Lauren Barnett on May 3, 2019 12:51:17 PM

With all your term papers, projects, and late-night study sessions, it can be difficult to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Luckily, at Clark University we have many resources on campus to help you stay on track. Whether you’re getting ready to graduate or in the midst of your first semester, these tips could be just what you need to find a healthier you!

apple (1) Eat well.

Healthy food choices are critical to maintaining overall well-being. At Clark University, we know the importance of nutrition. Our world-class Clark Dining team makes it their mission to provide healthy food options to the Clark community.

You’ll find a range of cuisine in popular social spot Higgins Café, which offers all-you-care-to-eat dining with a focus on home-cooked meals. The salad bar that greets you at the entrance is a good place to start for a nutritious lunch. Vegetables and proteins are sourced from local farms when possible and the lettuce is grown right on campus across the street in our Freight Farms container. One of our favorite features of the cafe is the Taste of Home station. If you're missing mom's cooking, you can submit a family recipe and our chefs may serve it!

Beyond the cafe, Clark University also offers the Bistro if you are looking for a quick bite on-the-go. Jazzman's near the library is ideal for those times you need a caffeine boost — and they have extended hours during finals time.

barbell Stay fit.

It can be easy to let your busy schedule get the best of you, so you need to establish a consistent exercise routine. With the Kneller Athletic Center right at the heart of campus, it's easy to pop in between classes, work, or studying. Exercise stabilizes your emotional state (ahem.. stress) and increases your energy levels, so you can keep going strong.

Grab a buddy and play racquetball or squash at our courts! Need a true escape from it all? Visit the indoor pool and enjoy the calming effects of the water all year round. If you feel the urge to take some frustration out on the weight machines, we have plenty of opportunities to pump iron in our Bickman Fitness Center.

 healthTake care.

We hope that you stay healthy throughout the semester — but if you find yourself under the weather, we have all you need to recover. The Clark University Health Service clinic is available to all students and functions much like a family doctor's office. Whether for treatment of illness or injury, stress reduction, or an immunization for an overseas trip, you'll receive care from our compassionate and professional staff of registered nurses, nurse practitioners, and part-time physicians — without having to leave campus.

Many of our students experience emotional pressure. Clark's Center for Counseling and Personal Growth is another on-campus resource that we strongly recommend you use to ensure mental health. Services are free of charge and solution-focused. If you're having trouble adjusting to school, battling depression or anxiety, or need assistance with stress or time management, we encourage you to visit our counseling center. The team will support you through these challenges.

confetti Have fun!

Intramural sports, clubs, and organizations on campus help break up the stress of schoolwork.

With over 190 different student organizations on campus, there's a place for everyone. Center your chi in one of our yoga classes.  Learn ballroom dancing or alpine skiing as a member of one of our recreational clubs.  Are you a Harry Potter fan?  Indulge your fantasy and join our Quidditch team. These small breaks from the rigors of academia will keep your mind sharp and curious. For an added health benefit, choose a social activity that is both cognitively and physically engaging.

meditation De-stress.

Yoga is great for body, mind, and spirit. The Bickman Fitness Center Multipurpose Room offers the perfect space to practice yoga or meditation. You can reserve the room in advance to make sure nothing gets in the way of finding your om.

If you venture off-campus, there are a variety of local yoga studios in the area. We recommend checking out Hot Power Yoga and Flowforms Yoga. Many of the local studios offer student discounts and special drop-in class rates, so be sure to take your student ID!
